Tullio De Piscopo was born in Naples on February 24, 1946. Growing up in a family of musicians, especially percussionists, he became familiar with percussion, drumsticks and drums as a child. Thirteen year old and self-taught, he already works in the nightclubs, then in the curtain raiser. In 1969, at the age of twenty-three, he moved to Turin, establishing himself on the music scene and obtained a writing as a fixed drummer at the Swing Club, a local jazz club of the time. In 1971 he moved to Milan, and was part of the group of Gianni Basso and Oscar Valdambrini. In 1973 with Renato Sellani, Dino Piana and Gianni Basso he formed the "Jazz Power Group". Through Eumir Deodato played with Bob James, and then accompanied Astor Piazzolla on tour recording six albums with accordionist. In 1974 and 1975 he was part of the "New Trolls Atomic System". In 1976 he founded the group "Future Percussion" and more and more frequently he accompanied American musicians on tour in Italy. With Jerry Mulligan he toured and recorded two albums. In 1977 he collaborated with Kay Winding, in 1980 with Severino Gazzelloni, and played with Chet Baker and Tony Scott. In 1981 he recorded his first live album with Larry Nocella, Lucky Milanese and Riccardo Zegna. He approached pop by collaborating on "Vai mò" and "Bella m'briana by Pino Daniele, composed music for the cinema (" Razza Selvaggia by Pasquale Squitieri, "Mi manda Picone" by Nanni Loy, "Naso di cane" by Squitieri and "32 Dicembre" by Luciano De Crescenzo). From 1982 to 1985 he collaborated with Gato Barbieri, Billy Cobham, Don Cherry, Wayne Shorter, Alphonso Johnson, Gerry Mulligan, Karl Potter, Nanà Vasconcelos. In 1983 he obtained excellent sales with the song "Stop bajon". In 1985 with the flautist Roberto Fabriciani he participated in numerous classical music concerts in the most important Italian theaters. He published the album "Passaggio da Oriente". In 1986 he played in Milan with John Lewis and with the Charme orchestra in a concert-meeting between jazz and classical music; he participated with his own group in the Sanremo Jazz Festival with guest Woody Shaw and with the same group he participated in the "Umbria Jazz Festival". Between 1987 and 1988, for the first time he brought the drums to the Scarlatti orchestra and jazz at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. He toured the United States, Canada, the Far East, Brazil and Australia. In December 1987 he represented Naples with Edoardo Bennato, James Senese, Tony Esposito, Joe Amoruso, Rino Zurzolo, Ernesto Vitolo in the mythical Apollo Theater in Harlem with guests such as James Brown, The Temptations, Eumir Deodato, Lester Bowie, Steve Thornton, Famadou Don Moyèe, Alphonso Johnson. In 1988 he reached the top of the singles charts with “Andamento lento”, presented in the Sanremo Festival, where he returned the following year with “E allora e allora”.
