“War” is an American funk, rock and soul band from Long Beach, California. The band was founded by record producer Jerry Goldstein and Eric Burdon, former lead singer of the band “The Animals”. The original lineup, known as Eric Burdon and War, included Eric Burdon on vocals, Howard E. Scott on guitar and vocals, Lee Oskar on harmonica and vocals, Thomas Allen on percussion and vocals, Charles Miller on saxophone and vocals, B.B. Dickerson on bass, Leroy “Lonnie” Jordan on keyboards and Harold Ray Brown on drums.
Their 1970 debut album, "Eric Burdon Declares War", achieved good success and the single "Spill the Wine" launched the band's career. Their performance at Ronnie Scott's Club in London on September 16, 1970 is historically noteworthy because it was the last public performance of Jimi Hendrix, who joined them on stage for the final 35 minutes of the second set of “Eric Burdon and War”; the following day he died.
After the release of Eric Burdon and War's second album, a double LP titled "The Black-Man's Burdon" in 1971, the band released its first album under the name “War”.
The album was only modestly successful, but later that year the band released "All Day Music," which included the singles "All Day Music" and "Slippin' into Darkness." The latter single sold over a million copies and was certified gold in June 1972. In 1972 they released "The World Is a Ghetto", which was even more successful. Their second single, "The Cisco Kid", received gold status and the album reached number one on the US Billboard charts. The 1973 album, “Deliver the Word,” featured the hits “Gypsy Man” and “Me and Baby Brother.” The group continued to achieve success with the album "Galaxy" in 1977, whose single of the same name was inspired by Star Wars. In 1982, “War” signed with RCA Victor Records and recorded “Outlaw,” which included the hit singles “You Got the Power,” “Outlaw” and “Just Why.” Thomas Allen died of a brain aneurysm on stage in 1988.
