"Via Afrika" was a South African afro-rock band formed in Johannensburg in 1983. It all started at the beginning of the year, when the "Kensington Mansions", a condominium on Noord Street in the center of Johannensurg, became the musical and spiritual home of the four components of "Via Afrika". Renèé Veldsman (vocals), Spider Wider (Kitty Cooper, percussion), Lukas Luislang (Crous, keyboards) and Michele Rowe (dancer), tried and experimented with new sounds to stand out on the international music scene. The first single and the first album were written and designed in this very place. "Hey Boy", "Via Afrika" and "Afrika The Tiger" were recorded in a small studio called Midnight Flyer (Kensington Johannensburg) and subsequently recorded at RPM Studios. They released the songs on 250 audiocassettes, which they sold along with the shirts in their shows to finance the tour.
