The Fatback Band is an American funk and disco band that gained popularity in the '70s and '80s. Formed in New York in 1970, the initial lineup included drummer Bill Curtis, guitarist Johnny King, bassist Johnny Flippin, trumpeter George Williams, saxophonist Earl Shelton, flutist George Adams, and keyboardist Gerry Thomas. Later, the band was enriched with the arrival of percussionist Wayne Woolford, singers Jayne and Gerry, saxophonist Fred Demerey, guitarist Louis Wright, and George Victory.
The Fatback Band signed a contract with Perception Records and, in the summer of that year, released the successful single "Street Dance." The track reached the top 30 of the Billboard R&B chart in the United States.
The band released the albums "Let's Do It Again," "People Music," and "Feel My Soul" before signing with Event Records in 1974.
In the mid-'70s, the Fatback Band incorporated jazz elements into their style and leaned more towards a disco sound. This change was reflected in the singles "Keep On Steppin'," "Yum, Yum (Give Me Some)," "(Are You Ready) Do The Bus Stop," and "(Do The) Spanish Hustle." These tracks became very popular in discos but failed to enter the American Top 10 chart.
Now under contract with Spring/Polydor, the group continued to release successful singles such as "Party Time," "The Booty," and "Double Dutch." At the end of 1977, they changed their name to Fatback and, in 1978, found their first top ten single with "I Like Girls." The song "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" is often considered the first commercially released rap single, having been released just a week before the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" in October 1979.
In 1980, Fatback achieved some of their biggest hits with "Gotta Get My Hands on Some (Money)" and "Backstrokin'." During the '80s, they managed to enter the charts with tracks like "Take It Any Way You Want It," "I Found Lovin'," and "Spread Love," the latter featuring singer Evelyn Thomas in 1985.
