“The Buggles” are an English new wave group formed in London in 1977,
composed of singer and bassist Trevor Horn and keyboardist Geoff Downes. Horn
began his career producing jingles and punk rock bands, while Downes was a
keyboard player in She's French. Downes had graduated from Leeds College of
Music in 1975 and moved to London in search of work as a keyboard player. The
two first met in 1976 while auditioning for Tina Charles' backing band.
In 1977, Horn and Downes reunited and began recording a selection of demos
in a small room in south-west London, including "Video Killed the Radio
Star", "Clean, Clean" and "On TV". The demo version of
"Video Killed the Radio Star" caught the attention of producer Chris
Blackwell of Island Records, who signed them to a recording contract.
Initially, the demo for "Video Killed the Radio Star" featured vocals
from Tina Charles, who also helped finance the project.
In 1979, “The Buggles” recorded their debut studio album, The Age of
Plastic. "Video Killed the Radio Star", the album's lead single, was
first released on 7 September 1979 to considerable commercial success, reaching
the top of the chart in 16 countries, including Italy, the United Kingdom,
Spain, France , Austria, Australia, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland and Ireland.
"Video Killed the Radio Star" was written by Trevor Horn, Geoff
Downes and Bruce Woolley. The backing track was recorded at Virgin's Town House
in West London, while the mixing and vocal recording were done at Sarm East
Studios.
Its music video, directed by Russell Mulcahy, was the first to air on MTV
in the United States on August 1, 1981.
In early 1981, Horn and Downes began work on the second album
"Adventures in Modern Recording". Released in November 1981, the
album was very innovative and experimental, but did not achieve the desired
success. Being largely a studio creation, “The Buggles” never toured and only
made a few playback appearances on the TV show “Top of the Pops.”
