“Tavares” is an American R&B, funk and soul music group made up of five American brothers. Ralph Edward Vierra “Ralph”, Arthur Paul “Pooch”, Antone Lee “Papputo”, Feliciano Vierra “Butch” and Perry Lee “Tiny” Tavares were children of Cape Verdean parents. They began performing in 1959 under the name "Chubby and the Turnpikes". In 1967 the band signed a record deal with Capitol Records and released a couple of hits: "I Know The Inside Story" and "Nothing But Promises". In 1968 keyboardist Bernie Worrell and drummer Joey Kramer joined the group and a few years later he will join the band "Aerosmith". From fall 1969 to September 1970, the band took the name "The Turnpikes". In 1973, they changed their name to "Tavares" and had their first Top 10 R&B hit with "Check it Out". In 1974, the "Tavares" hit #1 on the R&B chart with "Hall &" (repeated success a couple of years later performed by "Hall & Oates"). 1975 turned out to be a magical year for the band with the success of the single "Remember What I Told You to Forget", with the album "In The City" which entered the Top 40 Pop USA and above all with the great success "It Only Takes a Minute" (#1 Pop and R&B) . 1976 was no different: the two singles "Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" and "Don't Take Away The Music" taken from the album "Sky-High!" they depopulated in the United States and Europe. In 1977 the "Tavares" recorded the Bee Gees song "More Than a Woman" and the song was included in the soundtrack of "Saturday Night Fever". The single reached the Top 40 and gave "Tavares" their only Grammy Award. Later albums, such as "Madam Butterfly" and "Supercharged", moved away from the disco genre and were less successful in the charts. In the early 80's, "Tavares" left "Capitol Records" and signed with "RCA". In 1982 they had one last big hit with the track "A Penny for Your Thoughts", for which they were nominated for a Grammy Award. In 2014 they were inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame. Ralph Tavares died on December 8, 2021, two days before his 80th birthday.
