"Sugarhill Gang" is an American hip hop group formed in 1979 in Englewood, New Jersey. The original lineup included Henry "Big Bank Hank" Jackson, Michael "Wonder Mike" Wright, and Guy "Master Gee" O'Brien, all from Englewood. The three artists were brought together by producer Sylvia Robinson, who, along with her husband Joe Robinson, founded Sugar Hill Records. Both the group and the record label were named after the Sugar Hill neighborhood in Harlem. In 1979, their debut single "Rapper's Delight" made history by becoming the first rap song to enter the Billboard Hot 100’s top 40. This track is now considered one of the most significant rap songs of all time.
Despite their initial success, the band was unable to return to the top 40 in the United States, although they gained popularity in Europe with hits like "Apache" and "8th Wonder". The Sugarhill Gang disbanded in 1985, but the members reunited in 1990 to perform at the "RapMania: The Roots of Rap" concert at the Apollo Theater in New York. In 1994, Joey Robinson, Sylvia Robinson’s son, reformed the group. On November 11, 2014, Henry Jackson passed away at the age of 58 after a long battle with cancer. In 2019, the Sugarhill Gang celebrated the 40th anniversary of "Rapper's Delight" and the formation of the group with a worldwide tour, the Rapper's Delight 40th Anniversary World Tour. As of 2024, the group consists of Wonder Mike, Master Gee, Hen Dogg, DJ T-Dynasty, and Ethiopian King.
