“Stretch” were a British rock band of the 1970s born from the collaboration between singer Elmer Gantry (real name Dave Terry) and guitarist Kirby Gregory (real name Graham Gregory). Gantry had been the frontman of Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera while Kirby had been a member of Curved Air. The band was founded in 1974 and the following year achieved great international success with the song "Why Did You Do It". The single was recorded in the studio with Paul Martinez on bass, Kirby Gregory on guitar, Jim Russell on drums and tambourine, Hiroshi Kato on electric guitar and Bud Beadle, Chris Mercer, Mick Eve, Mike Bailey and Ron Carthy on horns. In 1975, the single of “Why Did You Do It” (3’28”) was released on 45 rpm (7 inch) and only in 1984 was this extended version of 7’48” released. The band released the album “Elastique”, but during the recording of this album, Martinez was fired. Drummer Jim Russell left the band before the recording of the second album, “You Can't Beat Your Brain for Entertainment”. Two more albums were made, but Gantry left before the final album “Forget the Past”. In 1979 the band “Stretch” broke up after manager Davis decided to stop his financial contribution. Stretch reformed in 2007, releasing a "Greatest Hits" collection and toured in support of the Jeff Healey Band. In 2011, the band released the album “Unfinished Business”, an 11-track recording for “Repertoire Records” that included new original songs, some covers and a new version of “Why Did You Do It”.
