Ivana Spagna also known as Spagna, was born in Valeggio sul Mincio (Verona) on December 16th 1954. Ivana's first steps in the world of music took place in 1969, when in January she participated in the fourth edition of the Girogarda competition with the song “Quando tu sorridi”, written for her by Athos Lorenzetti. In 1971 it was put under contract by the Dischi Ricordi label to record a 45 rpm with the first Italian version of "Mamy Blue" by Herbert Pagani and Hubert Giraud, with b-side “È finita la primavera”; the 45th was not successful, perhaps due to the greater confirmation of the version sung by Dalida; so in 1972, after the release of a 45 rpm with a song written by Bruno Lauzi, Ari ari, with b-side "Dio mai", the record company did not renew the contract. During the seventies, Spagna sang with her group, the Opera Madre, which included her brother, Giorgio "Theo" Spagna, and her partner at the time, Alfredo "Larry" Pignagnoli, in the various discos and dance halls of Italy, while the first years eighty saw Spagna first lend the voice to successful groups like "Fun Fun", then sing along with their own image, but using the pseudonyms of Mirage, Barbara York, Carol Kane and Yvonne Kay, with the latter recording "I've got the music in me" and "Rise up for my love", both Golden Disco. At the same time she became a chorister and worked as an author, signing, among others, the song "Take me to the top" from the Advance group. The true beginning of the career and the success came in 1986 when Ivana, using as a stage name "Spagna", self-produced for herself two songs in English with a dance timbre: "Easy Lady" and "Jealousy" (which is the B side of the 45 rpm) with which it achieved international fame. After this success, the well-known record company "CBS" decided to put Spagna under contract, planning its launch on the international music market: "Easy Lady" entered the French Top 5 of the French, Spanish and German charts and at number 1 in Italy for 6 consecutive weeks , selling a total of over two million copies. 1987 was the year of confirmation: the new Spagna single "Call Me", which anticipated the first album, "Dedicated to the Moon" ranked second in the Italian ranking, but reached the top of the English ranking, ranking at number 2 (Easy Lady only reached position 62). Given the excellent feedback, "Call me" was exported to the United States where it ranked 13th in the Billboard single dance ranking. In total the song sold over two million copies. The album "Dedicated to the moon" is one of the first to be printed also in CD support. The circulation of the first album by Spagna reached 500,000 copies. The singles extracted from the album were, in addition to the already mentioned "Easy Lady" and "Call me", "Dance Dance Dance", which won the 1987 Festivalbar. In 1994, during the summer came out what for a long time remained the last single in English by Spagna, Lady Madonna, who positioned herself 4 in the singles chart, while in autumn she was chosen by Elton John as the Italian voice of his "Circle of Life", soundtrack of the movie "The Lion King". In 1995 Spagna participated in the Sanremo Festival with the song "Gente come noi" and took third place. The song reaches the Top 5 best-selling singles, while the album "Siamo in due" sold over 350,000 copies, becoming the album of a best-selling female artist of the year in Italy. In 1996 Spagna tried the Sanremo adventure again, reaching the fourth place with "And I think of you". His album, Lupi solitari, will be the most sold of the whole Festival. The album was in fact Doppio disco di Platino in just one week and ended up selling a total of over 400 000 copies, becoming what is still Spagna's biggest commercial success in Italian. Ivana will participate in the Sanremo Festival for 5 times, then in 2008 she returned to the Ariston stage on the evening of duets to sing with Loredana Bertè. In that same year he received an honorary degree in Communication Sciences at the La Sapienza University of Rome.
