“Real Thing” are a British soul group formed in 1970. The band consisted of Chris Amoo (b. 14/10/1952), Dave Smith (b. 06/07/1952), Ray Lake (b. 11/02 /1946) and Kenny Davis. In the early 70s they managed to attract the attention of the "EMI" record company by singing live covers of American hits on various television broadcasts. In 1972 and 1973 they released a few singles but they didn't get a great response from the public. The turning point of their career occurred thanks to the collaboration with David Essex and Pye Records. In 1976 Eddie Amoo (brother of Chris) joined the band and thanks to the song "You To Me Are Everything", the group reached number one in the "UK Singles Chart". The single was certified silver with 250,000 copies sold. The follow-up track "Can't Get By Without You" reached number two in the UK charts. In 1976 The Real Thing released their first self-titled album, which included the two hit hits and third single "You'll Never Know What You're Missing" (#16 UK Singles Chart). In the second half of the 70s the band released numerous hits, the most famous being "Boogie Down (Get Funky Now)" and "Can You Feel The Force" (#5 UK Singles Chart in 1979). The single "She's a Groovy Freak" released in 1980 will remain the last notable "Real Thing". Kenny Davis drowned at age 44 and Ray Lake died in 2000 at age 54. Eddie Amoo died on February 23, 2018 in Australia at the age of 73.
