Level 42: The Rise of British Jazz-Funk and the Legacy of an Unmistakable Sound
Formed on the Isle of Wight in 1979, Level 42 established themselves as a driving force in the music scene of the 80s and 90s, conquering international charts with their distinctive sound that blended jazz, funk, and pop. The original lineup, consisting of Mark King (bass and vocals), Mike Lindup (keyboards and vocals), Boon Gould (guitar), and Phil Gould (drums), created a unique sonic alchemy destined to leave an indelible mark. Interestingly, the band's name is a tribute to Douglas Adams' novel "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," where "42" represents the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.
1985 marked a crucial turning point in their career with the release of "World Machine," an album that propelled them onto the international stage. The single "Something About You" proved to be a global success, climbing the charts and establishing them as undisputed pop stars.
However, it was with "Lessons in Love" (1986) that Level 42 reached the pinnacle of success. The track reached third place in the UK charts and placed in the top 10 in numerous countries, reaching the top spot in Spain, Germany, South Africa, Switzerland, and Finland. "Lessons in Love" not only solidified their popularity but also introduced them to the American audience, reaching twelfth position on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987. The success of the single paved the way for the album "Running in the Family," from which other successful tracks would be extracted.
Despite their popularity declining in the early 90s, due to lineup changes and the evolution of musical tastes, Level 42 disbanded in 1994 only to reform in 2001.
Today, with Mark King as the only original member remaining consistently present, Level 42 continues to perform and inspire new generations of musicians. Their music remains a benchmark for lovers of funk and pop, and Mark King's unmistakable slap bass is considered an icon in the world of music. Level 42's legacy is that of a group that knew how to innovate and experiment, creating a unique and recognizable sound that continues to resonate in the contemporary music scene.
