Lamont Herbert Dozier, also known as "Lamont Dozier" or "Lamont Anthony", was an American singer, songwriter and record producer born in Detroit (Michigan) on June 16, 1941. Lamont Dozier recorded some unsuccessful records for various Detroit labels before starting work in 1962 for the record label “Motown. Dozier was part of the "Holland-Dozier-Holland" trio, Motown's writing and production team, which made numerous hit records by artists such as "Martha and the Vandellas", "The Supremes", "The Four Tops" and “The Isley Brothers”. Along with Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier was the team's music arranger and producer, while Eddie Holland was dedicated to writing lyrics and vocal production. Dozier left Motown in 1968 to form the Invictus and Hot Wax labels and begin recording as a solo artist. In 1973 he left the "Holland-Dozier-Holland" trio and was replaced by the new arranger-producer Harold Beatty. The 1977 album, “Peddlin' Music on the Side” contained the smash hit "Going Back to My Roots". The record was produced by Stewart Levine, Hugh Masekela and Rik Pekkonen. In the early 1980s, the single "Going Back To My Roots" climbed again in the world Top Ten thanks to the two splendid covers published first by the American singer-songwriter and guitarist Richie Havens (1980) and later by the Funk-Soul band "Odyssey" (1981). In the 90s, the Italian band “FPI Project” composed by the trio Marco Fratty, Corrado Presti and Roberto Intrallazzi, released the hit single “Rich In Paradise” with the sampled base of “Going Back To My Roots”. In the 80s, Lamont Dozier wrote the song "Two Hearts” for Phil Collins. The song, soundtrack of the film "Buster", received a "Golden Globe Award" for best original song and an Oscar nomination for best original song. In 1990, Dozier and the Holland brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Lamont Dozier died on August 8, 2022, at the age of 81, at his home in Scottsdale (Arizona).
