Johnny Wakelin is a singer of English origin born in Brighton in 1939. Wakelin made his first releases in the clubs of his hometown without great success. He was discovered by Robin Blanchflower, record producer of "Pye Records", who in 1974 launched Carl Douglas to the top of the UK Singles Chart with the song "Kung Fu Fighting". Towards the end of 1974, Johnny Wakelin released the single “Black Superman” together with “The Kinshasa Band”, dedicated to the boxer Muhammad Ali. In January 1975, the song reached number seven in both the UK and Australian singles charts. In October of the same year, it reached number one in Canada on the RPM Singles Chart. In 1976, after leaving “The Kinshasa Band,” Wakelin released the hit song “In Zaire.” The single reached second place in various European countries (Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland) and fourth place in the United Kingdom. "African Man" from 1976 (tenth position in Germany and eighth position in Austria), will be Johnny Wakelin's last hit song.
