"John Davis & The Monster Orchestra" was an American disco
band, famous for its lead member, John "the Monster" Davis, who not
only lent his name to the band but also produced all of their music. John Davis
(08/31/1947) had previously been a member of the studio band MFSB during their
heyday in the late 1960s and early 1970s, appearing on many Philadelphia
International recordings.
In 1974, John Davis was involved in the production
and arrangement of the number one R&B hit, "Be Thankful For What
You've Got" by William DeVaughn, which sold a million copies.
The band
"John Davis & The Monster Orchestra" was formed in 1976 with the
release of their first album "Night and Day". The single "I
Can't Stop" became a major influence in hip hop culture, used by artists
such as Brothers Black, Jungle Brothers, Run-Dmc and Missy Elliott. After
achieving moderate success with the first album, in 1977 "John Davis &
The Monster Orchestra" released the second album "Up Jumped the Devil".
In 1978, the band released its third album "Ain't That Enough For
You", which became their most successful up to that point. In 1979 the
fourth and final album entitled "The Monster Strikes Again" was
released. The album spawned two very successful singles: "Love
Magic", which was a hit on the dance floors, and "Bourgie
Bourgie", a cover of the song written by Ashford & Simpson.
In 1981, a
new single, "Hangin' Out", was released, available only in 12-inch
format, which entered the "Billboard Hot Dance Club Play" in August
1981 and reached number 46. In 1990, the remix of " (Feel The) Love
Magic", which became a club hit again. In 1992, Davis wrote, produced and
performed "Theme From Beverly Hills, 90210". John Davis passed away
on January 27, 2023 at the age of 75.
