Gloria Fowles,
known professionally as Gloria Gaynor, is an American singer born on September
7, 1943 in Newark, New Jersey. The daughter of Queenie Mae Proctor and Daniel
Fowles, she attended "South Side High School" in Newark, graduating
in 1961. Gloria began singing in a nightclub in Newark with the jazz and
R&B band "The Soul Satisfiers". After several years of performing
in local clubs and along the East Coast, Gaynor began his solo career in 1971
with Columbia Records. His first real success came in 1973 with the song
"Honey Bee".
In 1975 he
signed with “MGM Records” and the album "Never Can Say Goodbye" was
released. The single "Never Can Say Goodbye" reached the top of
Billboard magazine's dance chart and was also successful on the pop (#9) and
R&B (#14) charts. The original version of "Never Can Say Goodbye"
was released in 1971 by "The Jackson 5", reaching number two on the
Billboard Hot 100. The single sung by Gloria Gaynor marked her first
significant international success, entering the Top 5 in Australia, Canada,
Germany and the United Kingdom. The song was certified silver by the British
Phonographic Industry and later gold in the United States.
In the
following years, Gloria Gaynor released the albums "Glorious" and
"Gloria Gaynor's Park Avenue Sound", achieving only moderate success.
In 1978 the album "Love Tracks" was released and the single "I
Will Survive" became her biggest hit, leading her to win a Grammy Award.
"I Will Survive", written by Freddie Perren and Dino Fekaris,
remained at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks, also reaching
the top of the UK Singles Chart and the Irish Singles Chart. It was later
certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Billboard ranked "I Will Survive" at number 35 on its list of the
"500 Greatest Pop Songs of All Time".
Gloria Gaynor
achieved another significant success in the 1980s with the release of her album
"I Am Gloria Gaynor" (1984), thanks mainly to the song "I Am
What I Am", which became a hit in dance clubs and Club Play chart between
late 1983 and early 1984.
