George Washington Benson is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 22, 1943. George grew up in the Hill District of Pittsburgh and began playing his first musical instruments at the age of seven. At just nine years old he released his first 45 titled “She Makes Me Mad”, with RCA Victor. He attended and graduated from Schenley High School in Pittsburgh and at age 21 recorded his first album, “The New Boss Guitar”.
Subsequently, George Benson signed with the “CTI Records” label, where he recorded several successful albums, mainly in the field of jazz. In 1974, the album “Bad Benson” rose to No. 1 on the Billboard jazz chart, while its follow-ups, “Good King Bad” and “Benson & Farrell,” both reached the top three on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. sold. His 1976 album “Breezin'” was certified triple platinum, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard album charts.
In 1977 he recorded the original version of "The Greatest Love Of All", a hit song covered years later by Whitney Houston.
In 1980 he released the highly successful pop album “Give Me The Night”, produced by Quincy Jones. The single "Give Me The Night", written and composed by "Heatwave" keyboardist Rod Temperton, was Benson's first single to reach number one on the US Billboard Soul Singles chart. It also reached number four on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming his most successful pop song. It also reached number two on the Billboard Hot Disco Singles chart and number seven on the UK Singles Chart.
