Carol Douglas is an American disco singer, born on April 7, 1948, in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York City. The daughter of jazz singer Minnie Newsome, she attended the Willard May School and later Quintanos High School. During high school, Carol was part of a female musical trio called "April May & June."
In 1965, she recorded her first single for RCA Victor, "I Don't Mind (Being Your Fool)," using the pseudonym Carolyn Cooke (the singer Sam Cooke is her cousin). After creating several jingles for television commercials, Carol was called to perform in the off-Broadway production "The Life of Mary McLeod Bethune."
In 1974, record producer Eddie O'Loughlin, vice president of Midland International Records, was looking for a female voice to reinterpret Sunny's song "Doctor’s Orders" through an advertisement in Showbiz magazine. Carol Douglas's audition earned her a five-year contract, and her version of "Doctor's Orders" became a major hit, reaching number 2 on the Billboard disco chart, number 9 on the R&B chart, and number 11 on the Hot 100. The single also achieved considerable success in Europe, reaching the Top 10 in numerous countries.
In 1975, Carol Douglas released her first album, "The Carol Douglas Album," followed in 1976 by "Midnight Love Affair" and in 1977 by "Full Bloom." The single "Midnight Love Affair" reached number one on the Billboard Disco chart. Although the song "Midnight Love Affair" appears for a few seconds in the film "Saturday Night Fever," it was not included in the official soundtrack.
In 1977, Carol recorded the single "You Make Me Feel the Music" for the soundtrack of the film "Haunted." In 1979, she released the album "Come into My Life," and the single "I Got the Answer" achieved moderate success in clubs. Her last album, "I Got Your Body," renamed "Love Zone" in the United States and Canada, was released in 1983 and included her last four singles released between 1981 and 1983: "My Simple Heart," "You're Not So Hot," "I Got Your Body," and "Got Ya Where I Want Ya."
