“Area Code 615” were an American progressive country rock band from Nashville, active in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The band took its name from the area code, which covered all of middle and eastern Tennessee at the time. The band consisted of Mac Gayden (lead guitar and vocals), Wayne Moss (guitar and bass), Kenny Buttrey (Drums), David Briggs (Keyboards), Bobby Thompson (Banjo and guitar), Buddy Spicher (Violin), Ken Lauber (Keyboards). Their most famous song was "Stone Fox Chase", used as the theme for the British Broadcasting Corporation's music program “The Old Gray Whistle Test”.
Area Code 615 members Wayne Moss, Mac Gayden and Kenny Buttrey went on to play with Nashville's Barefoot Jerry, while David Briggs later worked with Elvis Presley and Joan Baez.
Their cover of "Classical Gas", from their 1969 album of the same name, is sampled and featured in Irish and British Guinness TV adverts.
