Ait Meslayene, whose real name is Idir Benhabouche, was born on November 3, 1944 in Akbil (Ait Meslayene village) in Algeria. Aït Meslayène's artistic beginnings date back to participation in school festivals organized in his college, CEM in Milchelet. Towards the beginning of the 70s he began to record his first records, using as his pseudonym the name of his hometown sometimes associated with his first name, Idir. Some of his songs were written by the great author and composer Kamel Hamadi. Around 1975, Ait Meslayene emigrated to France and became one of the most prolific "Kabyle" singers, putting on the market about thirty albums (about 220 songs). Unfortunately his artistic activity stopped in the late 90's, when he was hit by Alzheimer's disease. Ait Meslayene died on December 21, 2000 and was buried in his native village.
