Airto Guimorvan Moreira is a Brazilian jazz drummer and percussionist, born in Itaiópolis on August 5, 1941. Raised in Curitiba and São Paulo in a family of folk healers, he was already a professional musician at the age of thirteen. In 1967 he revealed himself to the general public by recording the album “Quarteto Novo” with Hermeto Pascoal. After moving to the United States, Moreira studied with Moacir Santos in Los Angeles. He later moved to New York, where he began playing regularly with jazz musicians, including bassist Walter Booker. Through Booker, Moreira met Joe Zawinul, who in turn introduced him to Miles Davis.
Moreira was hired by Davis, with whom he remained for about two years, participating in several tours and in the recording of the album "Bitches Brew", considered the first true fusion work. After leaving Davis, Moreira joined Weather Report, Zawinul's new group, playing percussion on their first album. He left Weather Report to join fellow member Chick Corea's band Return to Forever, playing drums on the group's first two albums.
Moreira has collaborated with many of the biggest names in jazz, including Cannonball Adderley, Lee Morgan, Paul Desmond, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, John McLaughlin, Keith Jarrett, Al Di Meola, Zakir Hussain, George Duke and Mickey Hart. He was voted best percussionist in Down Beat Magazine's critics poll for the years 1975 to 1982 and again in 1993.
In September 2002, the President of Brazil, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, awarded Moreira and his wife Flora Purim the Order of Rio Branco, one of Brazil's highest honors.
